Pablo Martin Named Recipient of Fred Haskins Award
July 13, 2006 | Cowboy Golf
Martin became the seventh OSU player in the 36-year history of the award to be honored and is the first Cowboy since Hunter Mahan won in 2003 to receive the distinction. Lindy Miller was the first OSU player to earn the award, winning in 1978, and was followed by Bob Tway (1981), Willie Wood (1982), Scott Verplank (1986), Charles Howell (2000) and Mahan.
The award adds to an already impressive list of honors Martin compiled during his sophomore season. He also earned the Jack Nicklaus Award as the nation's top player and was named a first-team All-American for the second consecutive year while helping the Cowboys capture their 10th NCAA title. In addition, he was unanimously named the Big 12 Player of the Year and was a second-team Academic All-American.
The Malaga, Spain native also received the Golfstat Cup after finishing with the nation's best stroke average at 70.65. Of the squad's 12 stroke play events this past year, he finished among the top 10 on eleven occasions and placed in the top five nine times. Martin captured medalist honors twice during the season, winning the Ping/Golfweek Preview and the Isleworth/UCF Collegiate Invitational.
Martin was named the Big 12 Player of the Month on two occasions and was selected as the Southern Golf Association's National Amateur of the Month last fall.
The Cowboys also produced the award's runner-up as Jonathan Moore finished second in the Haskins balloting. As a redshirt freshman last season, he earned first-team All-America honors and was named the Phil Mickelson Award winner as the nation's top freshman after posting three victories, including a four-shot win at the NCAA Championship.
