Cowboy Golf Slips Into Seventh Place At NCAA Championship
June 02, 2006 | Cowboy Golf
The Cowboys began the day tied for third after a round of 281 on Wednesday, but were only able to manage one individual round under par on Thursday. With a 4-under total of 572, OSU will begin its third round two strokes out of fifth place and nine shots off the pace of tournament leader Washington, which gained the top spot with a 6-under 282 during its second round and holds a three-stroke lead.
Arizona State and Wake Forest will enter Friday's round tied for second at 566. The Sun Devils turned in the low round of the day with a 9-under 279.
“We didn't play well on the front nine and it's disappointing we didn't take advantage of the perfect conditions,” Cowboy head coach Mike McGraw said. “We just need to go out tomorrow and play well. There really isn't any mystery to what we need to do.”
Sophomore Pablo Martin opened with 10 consecutive pars on his way to shooting an even-par 72 to maintain his tie for the second spot. The Malaga, Spain native stands at 138, 6-under, and is three shots out of the top spot held by Wake Forest's Kyle Reifers.
Redshirt freshman Jonathan Moore made the turn at 2-under and recovered from a pair of bogeys on his back nine with birdies at Nos. 15 and 18 to get in with a 70. The 2-under total moved the Vancouver, Wash. native into a tie with Martin and two other players.
The round marked the eighth consecutive time Moore has broken par, but snapped his streak of seven consecutive rounds in the 60s that matched the school record set by Charles Howell.
Senior Zack Robinson dipped into a tie for 80th place after posting a 3-over 75 for a two-round total of 147, while junior Tyler Leon followed up his opening round of 75 with a 74 to slide into a tie for 106th place.
Freshman Trent Leon followed up his first-round 76 with a 77 to drop into a tie for 134th place at 9-over 153.
The Cowboys will begin their third round tomorrow at 7:47 a.m. (PST) on the par-72, 7,630-yard layout and will be paired with Minnesota and Texas A&M.
