Cowboy Golf Tied For Third Place At NCAA Championship
June 01, 2006 | Cowboy Golf
The second-ranked Cowboys will enter the second of the event's four rounds tied with Washington for third and one stroke out of the No. 2 spot held by UCLA. Wake Forest grabbed the first-round lead with an 11-under total of 277.
“It is nice to get off to a good start,” Cowboy head coach Mike McGraw said. “You can't necessarily win the tournament on the first day, but you can definitely put yourself behind the eight ball and we didn't do that today.”
Sophomore Pablo Martin led OSU with a 6-under 66 to stand in a tie with Southern California's Taylor Wood for second place and just one shot behind Wake Forest's Kyle Reifers for the individual lead. The Malaga, Spain native went out in 3-under and birdied three of his first four holes on his inward nine to move to 6- under. Martin got to 7-under before a bogey on his 16th hole resulted in his 66 and produced his team-leading 10th sub-70 round this season.
Redshirt freshman Jonathan Moore continued his remarkable play, posting a 4-under 68, giving him his seventh consecutive round in the 60s. The medalist in each of his last two starts, Moore will enter the second round in a four-way tie for fifth place. The Vancouver, Wash. native turned at 1-over par before a bogey- free second nine that included five birdies catapulted him up the leaderboard.
Senior Zack Robinson finished the day tied for 51st place after a round of 72. The Ft. Worth, Texas native stood at 1-over before a birdie on his last hole moved him back to level par. Robinson, who was named the recipient of the Byron Nelson Award yesterday, has now recorded eight-straight rounds of par or better.
Junior Tyler Leon posted a 75 during his first round to stand in a tie for 99th place, while true freshman Trent Leon came in with a 76 to stand in a tie for 118th place.
The Cowboys will return to the par-72, 7,630-yard layout tomorrow at 7:30 a.m. (PST) and will once again be paired with Georgia and Arizona.
