Cowboys? Winning Streak Comes To An End Against Nebraska
May 09, 2006 | Cowboy Baseball
The Cowboys, who saw their 11-game winning streak come to an end, left nine runners stranded on the basepaths in the loss as they dropped to 33-14 overall and 12-9 in Big 12 Conference play. The loss was just OSU's third at home this season and also snapped the Cowboys' seven-game winning streak in conference play
Andy Gerch got the scoring started in the top of the second with a solo home run over the left-field wall, and two batters later,
The Cornhuskers doubled their lead in the third. With two outs, Brandon Buckman singled, and Luke Gorsett followed with a two-run homer to make the score 4-0.
OSU got on the scoreboard in the fourth as Ty Wright's RBI double scored Deik Scram, and an RBI single by Shelby Ford made the score 4-2.
The Cowboys trimmed their deficit to 4-3 in the sixth. Scram led off the frame with a triple, and Wright followed with his second RBI of the night on a single to right field.
In the seventh inning, the Cowboys mounted a rally, loading the bases after a single by Corey Brown and walks to Tyler Mach and Scram. But
NU added to its lead in the eighth as the visitors erupted for four runs, the big blow coming on a two-RBI single by Jeff Christy.
The Cornhuskers would need that insurance as OSU answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning compliments of a three-run, opposite-field home run by Brown. The blast was the sophomore's ninth homer of the season and made the score 8-6.
That was as close as the Cowboys would get as NU tacked on two more runs in its final at bat.
Starter Josh Fritsche suffered the loss for the Cowboys. The southpaw lasted just 2.2 innings, giving up four runs on five hits to fall to 2-1 on the season.
Ford led OSU with a 3-for-4 night at the plate, with Wright and Brown each going 2-for-5.
