Cowboys Run Away From Field At NCAA Central Regional
May 21, 2006 | Cowboy Golf
The victory was the second in a row for the top-seeded Cowboys, who won The Maxwell last weekend, and was their sixth regional title since the current qualifying format was implemented in 1989. OSU, which last emerged victorious in regional action in 2003, posted a 280 team score on Saturday giving them a 7-under 845 total and a 16-stroke win over runner-up Northwestern.
“Our guys played well today,” Cowboy head coach Mike McGraw said. “To shoot 4-under in today's conditions was certainly a good score.”
For the fifth time, OSU also produced the regional medalist as redshirt freshman Jonathan Moore continued his torrid pace, posting a 67 to finish at 8-under 205 to finish three shots clear of the field. The Vancouver, Wash., native extended his streak of consecutive rounds in the 60s to six and has bettered par by 22 strokes in his last two outings.
“Jonathan has shown signs of doing this all spring and has played very well, so it was not surprising to see him win,” McGraw said.
For the second consecutive week, senior Zack Robinson finished as the runner-up to Moore, posting a final-round 71 for a 54-hole total of 208.
“Zack is a fifth-year senior for us and it has been really encouraging to see him step up and play the way he has,” McGraw said.
Sophomore Pablo Martin fired a final-round 69 to move from a tie for 21st place into a tie for 10th at 215, giving him his 10th top 10 in 11 starts this season.
True freshman Trent Leon carded a 73 on Saturday to finish in a group tied for 24th place at 219. Included in the group tied with a 6-over score was Leon's older brother, junior Tyler Leon, who posted a 74 during his final round.
The Cowboys will travel to Sunriver, Oregon and the Crosswater Golf Course for the NCAA Championship on May 31-June 3.
