Cowboy Golf Extends Lead At NCAA Central Regional
May 20, 2006 | Cowboy Golf
The Cowboys will head into the tomorrow's final round as the only team below par, finishing the day with a 36-hole, 3-under total of 565.
Scores ballooned on Friday as the field was greeted by cold and rainy conditions. OSU, which entered play with a one-shot lead over Northwestern, posted the day's best round by three shots and saw its overall lead grow to nine strokes over the second-place Wildcats.
A pair of Cowboys stand atop the individual leaderboard for the second consecutive week. Redshirt freshman Jonathan Moore and senior Zack Robinson, who finished 1-2 at The Maxwell last weekend, are separated by just one shot after two days of play.
Robinson started the day in 17th place before lighting up the par-71, 7,173-yard layout with a bogey-free round of 66 that included four birdies on his outward nine. The Ft. Worth, Texas native went out in 32 and recorded the final birdie on his 10th hole to vault to the top spot on the leaderboard with a 36-hole total of 137.
“I hit the ball really well and gave myself opportunities for success,” Robinson said. “I tried to stay calm and patient and just realized it was going to be a battle for everyone out there.”
“The important thing was I put together a round my team could use.”
Moore posted his second-straight 69 to stand alone in second place at 138. For the second day in a row, the Vancouver, Wash., native was strong down the stretch, posting back-to-back birdies to break par for the fifth consecutive round.
Junior Tyler Leon followed up his opening round 71 with a 3-over 74 to stand in a tie for 18th, while true freshman Trent Leon came in with a 76, giving him a 146 total and tying him for 21st place.
Also in the group at 146 is sophomore Pablo Martin, who also carded a 76 on Friday after opening with a 70.
OSU will be paired with Northwestern and Texas A&M tomorrow with the trio set to tee off at 7 a.m.
