Cowboys Conclude Spring Workouts With Orange-White Game
April 24, 2006 | Cowboy Football
The final totals on the scoreboard Saturday afternoon at Boone Pickens Stadium during Oklahoma State's annual Orange-White game showed the White team on top of the Orange squad by a 44-38 margin.
The White squad was spotted 14 points before the game started and 24 more at the beginning of the second half. The points were added to offset the fact the majority of the starters competed for the Orange squad and to keep the game competitive for the fans. Without the added points, the Orange outscored its teammates by a 38-6 margin as the Cowboys concluded spring football drills.
The annual Orange-White Game was played in front of more than 15,000 sun-drenched fans at Boone Pickens Stadium. Among the faithful gathered for the contest were more than 250 former players and coaches as part of Legends Weekend.
The former players and coaches had a morning golf outing before gathering at Boone Pickens Stadium for a buffet before the game.
“There were a lot of guys back who had not been here for 15 or 20 years. It was important for our staff to get those guys here. We had a great showing, “ said head coach Mike Gundy.
The Orange squad dominated the game statistically with 345 yards of total offense and 17 first downs to the White's 118 yards and 10 first downs.
Quarterback Bobby Reid completed 12 of 22 passes for 248 yards and tossed three touchdowns but also threw two interceptions and was sacked three times.
Tailback Mike Hamilton was the game's leading rusher with 77 yards on 17 carries and three Orange squad receivers had 60 or more yards, topped by Anthony Parks' 81 yards on three catches.
“It has been a great spring for us,” said coach Gundy after the game. “We had some great practices and then came out here and had a good spring game. We were excited about splitting the teams up and making those guys make plays. It worked out great for us.”
On Reid, the head coach said he made big plays and one bad decision.
“The only decision I thought he made that was bad was the interception on the goal line. He made some big plays. It is good to get him back out there in front of people where he has to perform on game day. I thought he ran the ball well.”
Reid, a sophomore from Houston said he was concentrating on what he had to do.
“Last year things were a lot faster for me, but now things have slowed down and I can concentrate on what I need to do. I think I have had a good spring and am a step above where I wanted to be.”
On the defensive side, Grant Jones came up very big for the White team. Jones had two interceptions that he returned for 13 yards. He also had five solo tackles and nine assists and forced a fumble.
Linebackers Chris Collins and Jeremy Nethon led the Orange defense with seven tackles each and defensive tackle Ryan McBean had five tackles including four for minus 24 yards.
