Dramatic Ninth Inning Clinches Series For Cowboys
April 02, 2006 | Cowboy Baseball
Freshman Jordy Mercer's RBI single with the bases loaded plated Ty Wright with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth, and senior Brae Wright hurled a complete game as OSU improved to 17-7 overall and 2-3 in Big 12 play. Texas A&M fell to 18-12 overall and 2-6 in league play.
The Aggies took the game's initial lead with a pair of runs in the third inning as Jake Vasquez and Ryan Hill each collected RBI singles.
TAMU pushed its lead to 3-0 in the fifth on an RBI double by Austin Boggs, who was 4-for-4 in the contest.
The Cowboys answered in the bottom of the inning as Mercer blasted the first home run of his OSU career, a two-run shot over the left-field wall off A&M starter Jason Meyer.
The score remained 3-2 until the bottom of the ninth when Cowboy designated hitter John Schindler led off the frame with a homer to right field off Jordan Chambless (1-3). The round tripper was also the first of Schindler's OSU career.
Following Schindler, Ty Wright drew a walk, and then Adam Carr pushed a bunt past A&M second baseman Jess Buenger into right field. The bunt resulted in a double for Carr, and Wright advanced to third.
With Cowboys on second and third, TAMU intentionally walked Corey Brown to load the bases. Mercer, who was 2-for-4 with three RBIs in the contest, would make the Aggies pay as he drove home the winning run with a base hit to left field.
Wright improved to 3-1 on the mound as the senior southpaw struck out five and allowed just one walk. It was the second complete-game win of Wright's OSU career, and the second complete game by a Cowboy pitcher this season.
OSU will try for a series sweep Sunday, with the finale scheduled for a 1:06 p.m. start.
