100-Play Scrimmage Highlights Friday Spring Football Workout
April 01, 2006 | Cowboy Football
It was O-State's sixth spring workout (of 15 allowed), and featured the first extensive scrimmage action of the workouts, to date. The workout ended with goal line situations for both the first and second units.
After the scrimmage, head coach Mike Gundy said overall, it was a good day. “We were able to get through a 100-play scrimmage and stayed injury free and saw a lot of guys get work,” he said. “It was a good scrimmage. We just need to keep working.”
Defensive end Victor DeGrate was one of the defensive standouts in the 2 1/2 hour workout. DeGrate, who had 53 tackles and led the team in tackles for losses a year ago, had three sacks and forced two fumbles in Friday's scrimmage.
“I was excited to see the defense force turnovers today,” Coach Gundy said. “I thought they moved around better early in the scrimmage and played with some enthusiasm. They still need to play harder at the end of the scrimmage and not let us just run the ball on the goal line.”
On the offensive side, Gundy said his team needed to eliminate penalties and turnovers. “We have to do a better job of pre-snap penalties and eliminate the turnovers,” he said. “There are going to be mistakes by the younger quarterbacks, but the veteran guys need to start limiting those turnovers.”
Wide receiver D'Juan Woods had a 42-yard reception from quarterback Bobby Reid during Friday's scrimmage and freshman quarterback Alex Cate threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Tevin Williams.
Reid said thought the offense had progressed over the first two weeks of the spring. “I think we have progressed through the first couple of weeks,” he said. “I think we performed well but there were too many mistakes.”
DeGrate, a preseason All-Big 12 candidate, said the defense played better than in the last scrimmage. “Last time it was just getting back into football and tackling,” DeGrate said. “Today, we came out ready and everybody was flying around and doing what they were supposed to do.”
For the scrimmage, four Oklahoma State quarterbacks were a combined 25 of 47 for 322 yards. Williams was the leading receiver with four catches for 86 yards and a touchdown while Woods had two catches for 54 yards. Mike Hamilton as the leading rusher with 10 carries for 46 yards.
In addition to DeGrate's three sacks and two forced fumbles, Jacob Lacey had a pair of interceptions and defensive lineman Marque Fountain added a pair of quarterback sacks.
The Cowboys continue spring drills Monday afternoon with a workout scheduled to begin at 3 p.m., on the grass practice fields. Next week's schedule also calls for 3 p.m. workouts on both Wednesday and Friday.
OSU's spring drills conclude on Saturday, April 22 with the annual Spring Game. The 2006 Spring Game will cap a weekend of activities that features the return of many former players and coaches. The Spring Game will kickoff at 5 p.m., on April 22 at Boone Pickens Stadium.
