Cowboys Win Sixth Straight With 8-2 Triumph Over CSUN
March 04, 2006 | Cowboy Baseball
With the win, the Cowboys improved to 7-1 and are assured of their second-straight series win. Sunday's series finale is scheduled for 12 noon, a change from the original start time of 1 p.m.
The Cowboys wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in Saturday's contest. Corey Brown walked to lead off the bottom of the first inning, and Ty Wright followed with an RBI double to left-center field. Shelby Ford then stepped to the plate and delivered a two-run, opposite-field home run to left field to make the score 3-0.
OSU pushed its advantage to 4-0 in its second at bat on a perfectly executed hit-and-run play as Jordy Mercer's RBI single scored Keanon Simon from second base. Simon led off the inning with a single and then stole second.
CSUN (8-10) cut the Cowboys' lead in half in the top of the fifth inning as the visitors plated a pair of unearned runs. With runners on first and second, the Matadors executed a double steal, and OSU catcher Adam Carr uncorked a wild throw into left field that allowed Todd Shelton to score. Another Carr throwing error soon followed, this time allowing Johnny Coit to score after having swiped third base, to make the score 4-2.
The Cowboys quickly answered, however, as Ford popped his second homer of the day in the bottom of the fifth. Two batters later, it was Carr atoning for his throwing errors in the top of the inning with a two-run home run to left-center field that made the score 7-2.
Aided by the Cowboy offense's 19 hits and three homers, Charles Benoit improved to 2-0 in his second start of the season as the sophomore southpaw allowed two runs on four hits and struck out five in 6.1 innings of work.
Ford finished 3-for-5 at the plate with two homers  his team-leading third and fourth round trippers of the season  and three RBIs, while Brown and Rebel Ridling were each 3-for-4 for the Cowboys.
