Cowboys Lose Series Finale, Swept By No. 16 Texas
March 26, 2006 | Cowboy Baseball
Oklahoma State was swept by Texas as a three-run home run by Drew Stubbs in the bottom of the eighth inning gave the 16th-ranked Longhorns an 8-7 win at Disch-Falk Field on Sunday.
Stubbs' blast gave UT (19-10, 4-1) an 8-6 advantage heading into the ninth. OSU rallied for a run in the final frame on an RBI single by Ty Wright, but Adam Carr flew out to right field with Cowboys on first and third to end the game.
With the loss, OSU opened Big 12 Conference play 0-3 and dropped to 15-7 overall.
The Cowboys continued their series trend of getting on the scoreboard first as they pushed across a run in the top of the first inning. With two outs, Shelby Ford reached on an error and was followed by a Tyler Mach single. Ty Wright then singled to center field to score Ford and give OSU a 1-0 lead.
The Longhorns took the lead in their second at bat with three runs on five consecutive hits. Kyle Russell followed a Jordan Danks' single with an opposite field, two-run home run to give UT a 3-1 advantage, and Nick Peoples also collected an RBI with a single.
OSU quickly erased its three-run deficit, tying the score in the top of the third with a two-out rally. A single by Mach scored Corey Brown from second, and Ty Wright followed with a two-run homer over the left-field wall to tie the score at 3-3.
But in the see-saw battle,
The score remained 5-4 in
Ty Wright's single to right field broke the 5-5 tie in the seventh as it drove home Ford from second base to give OSU a one-run lead.
That lead was erased when Stubbs blasted the game-winning homer over the left-field wall against Brae Wright, who dropped to 2-1 on the mound this season. Wright relieved freshman Jordy Mercer, who made his first career start on Sunday, and the senior southpaw struck out four in 5.2 innings of work.
Ty Wright finished the contest 4-for-5 at the plate and tied a career high with five RBIs, while Mach was 5-for-5 with a pair of RBIs.
OSU returns to Big 12 Conference action Friday when it hosts Texas A&M at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium. Friday's opener is scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. start.
