Cowboys Drop Second Game To Texas, 7-5
March 26, 2006 | Cowboy Baseball
Oklahoma State's late-inning rally against No. 16 Texas ended with the Cowboys on the short end of a 7-5 score Saturday in front of 5,659 fans at Disch-Falk Field.
The Cowboys left the bases loaded in the top of the ninth and left 13 runners stranded on the base paths in the contest as they dropped to 15-6 overall and 0-2 in the Big 12 Conference.
As it did in Friday's opener, OSU got on the scoreboard first, this time when Adam Carr followed a Ty Wright single with a home run to left-centerfield to give the Cowboys a 2-0 advantage. The blast was Carr's fifth homer of the season.
The Longhorns cut OSU's lead in half in the bottom of the third. Kyle Russell walked to lead off the inning and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Russell later scored when Drew Stubbs delivered a two-out, RBI triple to center field.
In the pivotal fourth, UT's Jordan Danks led off with a single, and after an error by Benoit, a sacrifice bunt and a walk loaded the bases. Chance Wheeless then singled to drive in a pair of runs and give the Longhorns a lead they would never surrender.
Texas (18-10, 3-1) added to its lead in the seventh, putting up three more runs on a two-RBI single by Nick Peoples and another RBI hit by Wheeless that made the score 7-2.
OSU finally got back on the scoreboard in the eighth inning, scoring a pair of runs off UT reliever Kenn Kasparek on back-to-back RBI singles by John Schindler and Justin Colbert that made the score 7-4. But the Cowboys' rally ended with the bases loaded when Jordy Mercer popped out to second base.
The Cowboys again made things interesting in the ninth. After Tyler Mach singled and Wright walked, Carr grounded out to move the runners over. With two outs, Schindler reached on an error, which scored Mach and kept the inning alive.
A walk to Colbert again loaded the bases, bringing to the plate Keanon Simon, who was 3-for-5 in the contest. But Simon grounded to third for a force out which ended the game.
UT starter Adrian Alaniz picked up the win to improve to 4-0 on the season, while Austin Wood recorded the final two outs of the contest for his second save.
