Cowboys Finish First Week of Spring Drills with Scrimmage
March 25, 2006 | Cowboy Football
Friday was the first day the Cowboys practiced in full pads this spring. Although the weather was sunny and mild, the Cowboys still were not able to practice on the grass practice fields due to wet conditions.
Head coach Mike Gundy said the offense had the upper hand in Friday's scrimmage.
“Our execution was better,” Gundy said. “Obviously, we are in our second year in the system which makes a big difference. We just turned them loose and let them play.”
Gundy also said the play of the offense was solid across the board.
“The quarterbacks handled everything OK,” Gundy said. “I think our wide outs made some plays and the running backs did a good job of taking care of the football.”
After seeing a solid offensive performance, Gundy said there was one area the defense could improve upon.
“Defensively we are giving up way too many big plays,” Gundy said. “We missed too many tackles. Our defense has to tackle better in space.”
Overall, Gundy was happy with the way the team performed in the scrimmage.
“I am pleased. When you scrimmage this early in the spring, you are rolling the dice because guys will go out there and make mistakes,” Gundy said. “We believe in putting them out there and letting them go. I am pleased we were able to go out there and execute.”
The Cowboys will continue spring drills on Monday, March 27 at 3 p.m.
