Davies Sets NCAA Provisional Qualifying Mark

TUCSON, Ariz. Â– Oklahoma State's Mary Davies captured a first-place title in the 3,000-meter steeplechase Saturday to lead the women's track and field team at the Willie Williams Classic.

Davies, a sophomore from Whangarei, New Zealand, ran an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 10:18.70. Davies' finish was nearly a minute better than UCLA's Pilar Delgado, who finished with a time of 11:16.78.

“We were very surprised with her time,” Cowgirl head coach Rene Sepulveda said. “Mary had a tough week training in the high altitude conditions.

“This meet was a practice run for her, as she set an NCAA provisional qualifying mark.”

Sepulveda said that he held Davies and Slavikova back from running 100 percent so they could use the meet to prepare for what is ahead of them during the outdoor season.

“We used Spring Break to train our distance runners at high altitude conditions in New Mexico,” Sepulveda said. “We then traveled to Arizona to use this meet as preparation for the outdoor season.”

OSU will prepare for its first team meet March 25, at the Tulsa Duels in Tulsa. The Cowgirls will travel its sprinters, jumpers and throwers.
