Cowboys Continue Independence Bowl Workouts
December 26, 2006 | Cowboy Football
After two days of rainy conditions in Shreveport, the Oklahoma State Cowboys welcomed some sunny weather Tuesday as they continued preparations for Thursday's PetroSun Independence Bowl.
OSU head coach Mike Gundy explained that the Cowboys treated the practice like they would a Thursday practice during the regular season.
“It was nice out there today,” Gundy said. “I felt like I was on South Beach today compared to the last couple of days. Our players have really enjoyed the last few days here and we had another good practice.
“Today was basically our Thursday practice on a game week. There are a lot of different theories on how to approach bowl week. We feel more comfortable with staying in a normal game week routine. I have seen it done several ways. Sometimes you have great preparation and do not play well. I think ultimately it comes down to the players.”
Gundy added that he was excited about how his players and staff have prepared for the showdown against Alabama.
“I think we have had a good month of preparation,” Gundy said. “I think we have had a good week of practice. These last four practices may have been the best we have had. We have had some spirited practices, and we feel good about were we are at.”
OSU will be looking to end the 2006 season with a 7-6 record when they take on Alabama, who also brings a 6-6 into the game, Thursday at 3:30 p.m. The Cowboys will be in search of their first bowl win since a 2002 Houston Bowl victory over Southern Miss, while Alabama has the most bowl wins in NCAA history.
“Like I said when we first found out that we were going to play Alabama — do not let their 6-6 record tell you what kind of team they have,” Gundy said. “When four of your loses are against Arkansas, LSU, Auburn and Tennessee, I am not sure anyone in the country would want to take those guys on the road week in and week out.
“They are a very physical football team. They can play competitively with any team in our league on any given week. They are a good football team.”
