Cowboys Go Through Rainy Christmas Eve Practice
December 24, 2006 | Cowboy Football
The Oklahoma State Cowboys took the turf at Independence Stadium on Christmas Eve for a two-hour practice in cold, rainy conditions Sunday as they continued preparations for Thursday's Independence Bowl.
“It was a good day to practice,” OSU head coach Mike Gundy said. “There was a steady rain out there and from what I understand it might rain on Thursday. It was good to practice in it and get used to it.
“(The players) were fine. These guys are going to go out there and practice hard. One thing the staff has done a good job of getting across to them is that we are going to practice for two hours. They might as well have fun out there. The leadership on this team has brought the young players along and they understand that.”
Junior running back Dantrell Savage, who leads OSU in rushing with 708 yards, added that the rain did not dampen the Cowboys' spirits.
“It is not that difficult to practice in the rain,” Savage said. “There are some things you have to watch out for. You learn to get through those things. Practice is about focusing on getting better.”
OSU (6-6) will square off against Alabama in the Independence Bowl on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. The Crimson Tide are also 6-6 on the season.
“I know Alabama is a good team,” OSU junior cornerback Martel Van Zant said. “We have the same record, but the records do not matter. I just want to get out there and have the competition. We will see how things go.”
The Cowboys will attend the Independence Bowl Welcome Party tonight for a Jambalaya Dinner and the Iron Chef Cook-Off between selected players from OSU and Alabama.
