Cowgirls Saddle Up for Midwest Regionals

The top two teams earn automatic berths to the NCAA Cross Country Championships, which will be held Nov. 20 in Terre Haute, Ind.
OSU, which captured its first regional title since the 2001 season last year, has gone through an up and down season this year as it is coming off a fourth-place finish at the Big 12 Championships, on Oct. 27. The Cowgirls enter the regional meet, ranked No. 5 in the region behind Minnesota, Illinois, Iowa and Nebraska, respectively.
Senior Mary Davies has been the catalyst of the team as she earned her third consecutive All-Big 12 honor at the conference meet. Davies will seek her third all-region honor this weekend.
Along with Davies, the Cowgirls have also been led by three new faces in freshman Tone Hjalmarsen, Hanna Holst and Leah Schroeder. The trio has played a major impact on OSU's season as each has taken advantage of scoring opportunities.
Cowgirl head coach Rene Sepulveda said he hopes to get top-five performances from Czech Republic natives, senior Eva Slavikova and junior Eva Tomankova. The duo has suffered setbacks this season with nagging injuries, but have managed to put a good impression on Sepulveda.
“Both Eva's have really improved in the past couple of weeks,” Sepulveda said. “It has been a tough year for both of them as they have battled back from injuries. We are looking for them to score for us.”
Also for the Cowgirls, sophomore Maria Trejo will look to run well in her first regional meet.
The 6k race will start with the gun sounding off at 10:00 a.m. (CT).
