Stillwater, Okla. (AP) -
No goal posts came down. But all misgiving about the Oklahoma State Cowboys did.
Lending legitimacy to an unbeaten record, OSU redshirt freshman quarterback Tony Lindsay rushed for career-highs of 126 and three touchdowns Saturday afternoon as the Cowboys dominated defending Big 12 Conference champion Texas, 42-16 at Lewis Field.
The Cowboys, who suffered through eight consecutive losing seasons, suddenly found themselves on the brink of national recognition and in contention for a league championship game berth.
They stood 5-0 for the first time since 1987 and 2-0 in conference play for the first time in 25 years.
With this victory Simmons improved to 14-14 in his third year at OSU, and shortly after approximately 43,100 fans took their seats, the game was over.
OSU scored more points on its first two possessions (15) than in any previous match up against UT. With two Lindsay touchdowns, (11 yards and 1 yard), and a swinging gate conversion, the Cowboys led 15-0 less than nine minutes in the game.
Following the 42-16 trample, the OSU players lingered on the field, soaking up an appreciative crowd and their most significant triumph of the decade.
The Cowboys only other victory over the Longhorns came in 1944.
