Hours-and hours and hours- after Barry Sanders won the Heisman Trophy, the junior tailback from Oklahoma State literally ran all over Texas Tech, rushing for four touchdowns and 332 on 44 carries.
And the Cowboys needed all of Sanders' brilliance, as they had to hang on for a wild 45-42 victory over Tech in the first college football game played at the Tokyo Dome and one of the longest played anywhere.
The game started and ended late, taking three hours and 37 minutes - plus 12 touchdowns, one field goal and 12 extra-point kicks - to finish.
Sanders had been announced as the Heisman Trophy winner  OSU's first  some nine hours earlier in New York.
Sanders, the eighth junior to win the Heisman, finished the regular season with an NCAA-record 2,628 yards rushing. He broke the record of 2,342 set by USC's Marcus Allen in 1981, on a 15-yard run with 2:33 left in the first quarter.
The all-offense no defense battle included a remarkable 29-minute spree  from 6:32 of the second quarter until 7:43 remained. During that span, the two teams scored on 11 of 12 possessions.
Though Sanders rushed 21 times for 167 yards and two touchdowns in the first half, the Cowboys trailed 21-17 at halftime, as Tech quarterback Billy Joe Tolliver had completed 15 of 22 passes for 209 yards.
OSU took a 24-21 lead just 2:25 into the second half on an 11-yard pass from Mike Gundy to Hart Lee Dykes. Four minutes later, the Cowboys made it 31-21 on another Gundy-to-Dykes strike, of 6 yards.
Texas Tech pulled to 31-28 with 2:45 left in the third quarter on a 1-yard run by James Gray.
