November 15, 2006 | Cowboy Wrestling
Last Time Out
Oklahoma State won seven of the 10 bouts as OSU defeated California-Davis, 22-9, to open the 2006-07 season inside Gallagher-Iba Arena. The Cowboys got a major decision from Newly McSpadden and Brandon Mason defeated fourth-ranked Ken Cook. B.J. Jackson had a gutsy performance completing a 10-4 decision on an injured knee. Freshmen Tyler Shinn and Jared Rosholt both picked up decisions in their first career match for OSU. Also earning decisions were defending national champion Johny Hendricks and returning All-American Coleman Scott.
Scouting the Spartans
Michigan State boasts a strong lineup at the beginning of every dual, but it does not have a lot of strength at the end. The Spartans boast national title contenders in Nick and Andy Simmons. Andy is the 141-pounder, while Nick could wrestle at either 125 or 133. MSU also boasts redshirt freshman Franklin Gomez who will wrestle at the weight class that Nick does not wrestle, and he could place high come March. The Spartans only other ranked wrestler is at 184 where Joe Williams is ranked 17th. They have as many as six new faces in the lineup, led by Gomez who is an All-America candidate. Four redshirt freshmen will grace the mat against the Cowboys on Thursday.
