The Cowgirls out shot the Tigers 13-11 for the contest and had several scoring opportunities that could have ended the game before the shootout. Jesyca Rosholt had a shot just before regulation that was just wide of the post, and Yolanda Odenyo had a shot that nearly cleared the head of Phillips but she got a finger on it to save it. Odenyo finished the game with seven shots, four of which were on net.
The game turned physical in the second half as each team was whistled for 17 fouls. Clemson was called for 35 fouls for the game, and the referee issued four yellow cards to the Tigers. The Cowgirls had three cards pulled on them, including a red card on assistant coach Robby Hagemann.
“Unfortunately in our sport the game sometimes comes down to what is the equivalent of free throws to decide a game,” co-head coach Karen Hancock said. “My team played very hard. There is no question about effort with this group. We were projected to finish seventh in the Big 12 and we finished second. Sometimes it is tough to go on the road and get results and we ran into that today.”
