Lacey Rallies No. 13 OSU past Iowa State, 3-2
October 07, 2006 | Cowgirl Soccer
Katie Lacey scored two goals in the final seven minutes of regulation to send the game into overtime. Lacey headed in a free kick in the 84th minute by Niccole Grimaldi, and she headed in a corner kick by Grimaldi to tie the game in the 88th minute.
The Cowgirls carried the momentum into the two overtime periods. In the 107th minute, Yolanda Odenyo found an opening and fired a shot that was saved by ISU keeper Ann Gleason, but Radtke was right there to put it away for the game winner.
“We played with a high tempo that they could not keep up with in the second half,” Radtke said. “We scored to make it 2-1, and we were back in the game. Katie scored to tie it, which was amazing. Overtime was still a battle and we found a way to win.
“I was there and I scored, but I have to give credit to the team. It was a team effort and everybody worked so hard for it. It was awesome to come from two goals behind.”
OSU improved to 10-2-1 on the season and 5-1 in Big 12 play, while ISU fell to 6-8 on the year and 2-2 in conference action. It is the first five-win Big 12 season in the history of the Oklahoma State program.
“Iowa State did a good job in the first half and we came out a little flat,” co-head coach Colin Carmichael said. “We really turned up the tempo in the second half and you could sense a goal coming. We showed a lot of heart to come back and get the win.”
The Cyclones grabbed the early lead when Brittanie Waddell flipped a header over OSU keeper Erin Stigler. Beth Passman took a free kick and Stigler went out to grab it, but Waddell got a head on it first to put ISU on the board in the 19th minute.
The game remained tied until halftime. The Cowgirls created scoring opportunities, but could not get the finishing touch. OSU out shot Iowa State 8-4 and took two more corner kicks, but they trailed by a goal at the half.
Leslie Hill extended the lead just over a minute into the second half when she headed in an Iowa State corner kick.
The Cowgirls started to attack and created opportunities, but could not find the net. Jesyca Rosholt was one-on-one with the keeper but her shot was saved. Radtke took a shot that went off the cross bar, and the Cyclones momentarily preserved the lead.
OSU took 13 shots in the second half and had four more corners, but they could not find the net until late in the period.
The Cowgirls finally broke through in the 84th minute on Lacey's header. Lacey came through again just four minutes later to force the sudden victory overtime period.
“I think during the season you are not always going to play your best in every game,” Carmichael said. “These girls showed a lot of character, a lot of heart and a lot of desire. That is something you cannot coach. You have to give credit to the girls who found a way to win.
Oklahoma State hosts Missouri on Sunday at 1 p.m., at the OSU Soccer Complex.
