Cowboys Roll During First Day At Match Play Championship

The fourth-seeded Cowboys defeated No. 13 seed North Carolina State, 4-1, in the first round behind impressive performances by Tyler and Trent Leon.
Tyler, a senior, posted a 5 and 3 win over Jerry Richardson after winning five of the first seven holes. Trent, a sophomore, cruised against his first-round opponent as well, defeating Andrew Byrd, 6 and 5.
Senior Ryan Posey took a 1-up lead on his second hole and reclaimed the lead for good on his fifth hole en route to a 4 and 2 victory over Brad Revel, while true freshman Chris Ward claimed the fourth point for OSU after winning three of his final four holes against Garry Hill for a 4 and 2 victory.
The victory set up a second round matchup against fifth-seeded Clemson that saw the Cowboys claim all five matches.
Tyler Leon squared his match by winning the 13th hole and won the 17th to sneak out a 1-up victory over Kyle Stanley, while Trent Leon never trailed in his match and claimed a 4 and 3 win over Sam Saunders.
After losing hole No. 1, Posey won five of his next 10 holes to defeat Phillip Mollica, 6 and 4. Whitekiller also led for the duration of his match against Tanner Ervin and held on for a 2 and 1 win.
Ward found himself in a close battle with David May that came down to the final hole. The OSU freshman was able to halve the hole and emerge with a 1-up win.
The Cowboys are competing in the event without their two first-team All-Americans from a year ago in Pablo Martin and Jonathan Moore. The duo completed play at the World Amateur Team Championship in Stellenbosch, South Africa on Sunday.
Martin carded a 5-under 67 to finish at 281 and tied for seventh place, while Moore finished tied for 51st after a 74 put him at 2-over 290.
OSU will meet top-seeded Florida in tomorrow's third round.
