Cowgirls Set for Big 12 Championships
October 26, 2006 | Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
OSU carries a load of talent into the championships, including three scorers and two All-Big 12 standouts from last year's second-place team.
Among last year's scorers, senior Mary Davies has been solid this season as she has led the team in two meets. Davies will have her sights on capturing her third consecutive All-Big 12 honor, while sophomore Nina Andersson will hope to gain her second.
Senior Eva Slavikova and junior Eva Tomankova both have been hampered by injuries this season. The duo has battled back and will hope to have an impact on the Cowgirls success at the championships.
Junior Kim Blomkvist will look to carry momentum into the championships after scoring in three meets this season.
The Cowgirls are looking for strong finishes from freshmen Hanna Holst, Tone Hjalmarsen and Leah Schroeder. The trio has each scored this season and will look to gain postseason experience before heading into the regional meet.
“Tone (Hjalmarsen) has been a strong runner for us this year,” volunteer assistant coach Jerry Crockett said. “She has a great shot at running in our top three.
“As for Hanna (Holst) and Leah (Schroeder), they both are talented runners, have great attitudes and are willing to learn. We are hoping one of them can develop into a top three runner for us.”
Joining the Cowgirls, sophomore Maria Trejo will compete in her second conference meet. Coach Crockett considers Trejo one of the most improved Cowgirl runners.
The meet will be stacked with strong competition from the likes of defending conference champion, No. 10 Colorado, 21st-ranked Texas Tech and 30th-ranked Baylor. Colorado has dominated the conference meet, taking nine of the ten titles.
Kansas will host the meet with the gun sounding off at 10 a.m. for the women's 6k run. This marks the first time that Kansas has hosted a Big 12 Championship.
