Cowboy Baseball Excels In Classroom
January 23, 2006 | Cowboy Baseball
Of the 40 players on OSU's roster, 18 earned a 3.0 G.P.A. or higher, and the overall team G.P.A. was a 3.01. The Cowboys also set a record for the number of players named to the President's and Dean's honor rolls, with 11 players earning that distinction.
“I'm extremely proud of how the guys performed in the classroom,” said OSU academic advisor Alan Good. “In my 11 years as a counselor at OSU, this is the hardest working group of student-athletes I've had. These guys don't miss appointments and always show up in the learning center and to meet with tutors, and it showed in terms of their impressive academic performance.”
Named to the President's Honor Roll (4.0 G.P.A.) were junior John Schindler, an economics major, and freshman Joe Kent, who is majoring in biomedical sciences.
Nine Cowboys qualified for the Dean's Honor Roll by earning a G.P.A. between 3.50 and 3.99. Those players were junior Brandon Adams (sociology), senior Matt Clarkson (broadcast journalism), junior Breck Draper (education), junior Ryan Flavell (education), junior Shelby Ford (education), redshirt freshman Kendall Horner (English), junior Keanon Simon (physical education), junior Jared Swart (physical education) and junior Ty Wright (education).
OSU also had several former players return to school in the fall and have successful semesters. Jose Virgil earned his degree in education, while Travis Ingle completed his sociology degree. Thomas Cowley made the Dean's Honor Roll, while Joe Weaver maintained a G.P.A. over 3.0.
“It's exciting to have our players taking advantage of the total student-athlete experience and doing what they're supposed to do in the classroom,” said OSU head coach Frank Anderson. “Academics is something we really stress in our program, and it's good to see not only our current but our former athletes taking advantage of their opportunities.”
