Cowboys Rebound With Two Dual Victories
January 21, 2006 | Cowboy Wrestling
Oklahoma State rebounded from a tough loss to Minnesota by dominating 20th-ranked Cal Poly, 36-8, and Fresno State, 44-3, in front of 3,367 fans inside Gallagher-Iba Arena on Friday night.
Coleman Scott started the double dual with a technical fall in the first match of the night. It was all OSU after that as the Cowboys won 14 of the 17 matches wrestled.
“It was hard to tell how we responded,” head coach John Smith said afterward. “I can give you that answer after we wrestle
The highlight of the evening came in just the second match of the night when OSU's fourth-ranked Morgan met high school teammate third-ranked Darrell Vasquez of Cal Poly. Morgan got on the board first with a takedown in the first period. Morgan's lead was 3-1 heading into the third period.
Morgan was aggressive from the top position riding Vasquez for much of the third period to assure him of a riding time point. With eight seconds left in the match, Vasquez escaped and got a takedown which sent the match into overtime. It was Morgan who showed the superior takedown skills in the sudden victory period by shooting a double leg takedown and securing the victory with 15 seconds left in the period.
“He (Morgan) has been solid for us,” Smith said. “This is just a rollover from the way he has been wrestling. Obviously, he let up with 10 seconds left, but it would have been easy to drop your head in overtime. He didn't and picked up the takedown to win the match. It was pleasing to see.”
Esposito put the Cowboys up 14-4 in the dual with Cal Poly with a first period fall over Jeff Owens.
Kevin Ward and Johny Hendricks both followed with major decisions and Brandon Mason added a technical fall in
Jack Jensen added a decision and Steve Mocco closed out the dual with a fall to make the final score 36-8 over Cal Poly.
