Cowgirls Battle Hawkeyes to a Draw
September 03, 2005 | Cowgirl Soccer
The Cowgirls remained unbeaten at 3-0-1, while Iowa evened its record at 1-1-1.
The Cowgirls scored first when Yolanda Odenyo buried a free kick from the top of the penalty area in the 18th minute. Odenyo took the team lead in goals, scoring her third goal of the season.
The Hawkeyes tied the game just three minutes later when Katelyn Quinn vollied the ball into the net off of a cross from Jamie Maltman. Iowa took advantage on a mistake by OSU keeper Jeanne Rankin when she mishandled the ball and Quinn made the Cowgirls pay for it.
“We made one costly mistake and it cost us,” head coach Karen Hancock said. “ When you take 21 shots you need to capitalize. We were close on a couple of headers, but close doesn't get us very far."
OSU out shot Iowa 21-12, but could not cash in on any goal scoring opportunities.
Oklahoma State was the more aggressive team throughout the overtime period. The Cowgirls earned five corner kicks, but only managed to take three shots at the goal. Cassie Lewis got a head on the ball, but it sailed over the cross bar.
“We went on the road in the Big Ten and had an opportunity to win, but we have to finish when we get those opportunities.”
Both goalkeepers were outstanding as Iowa keeper Lindsey Boldt recorded 10 saves. Rankin had her busiest night so far this season, saving five shots.
The Cowgirls return to action Sunday morning at 11 a.m. when they face Wisconsin, ranked 25th nationally, at the McClimon Soccer Complex.
