Cowboy Golf Finishes Third at Ping/Golfweek Preview
September 29, 2005 | Cowboy Golf
The Cowboys, last year's Preview champion at Caves Valley Golf Club, tallied a three-round total of 862, placing them two strokes behind tournament runner-up Georgia Tech. Wire-to-wire leader Georgia carded a final round 277 to coast to a 15-shot victory with a 19-under total of 845.
Individually, Bulldog freshman Brian Harman and OSU sophomore and defending tournament champion Pablo Martin battled down the stretch as Martin looked to erase the one-shot advantage Harman held entering the final round.
Martin, who tied the competitive course record yesterday with an 8-under 64, held a two-shot lead with two holes remaining. However, the Malaga, Spain, native came in with back-to-back bogeys that resulted in him sharing medalist honors with Harman. The duo finished with 11-under 205 totals after Martin fired a final round of 68 and Harman signed for a 69.
The victory was the third of Martin's career. In addition to last year's Preview, he was co-medalist at last fall's Isleworth Collegiate.
Junior Tyler Leon continued his climb up the leaderboard with a 68 of his own to finish tied for 13th place at 214. The Dallas, Texas, native fired a 33 on his outward nine that included five birdies before coming in with a 35.
True freshman Trent Leon wrapped up his first collegiate event with a 74 for a 223 score to finish tied for 39th.
Redshirt freshman Jonathan Moore moved up 10 spots in his Cowboy debut as he rebounded from an 81 during his second round with an even-par 72 to end play tied for 50th place at 226.
After opening with consecutive rounds of 76, senior Zack Robinson posted a final-round 74 to tie for 55th at 227.
The Cowboys will continue their fall schedule on Oct. 23 when they travel to Windermere, Fla., to take part in the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational.
