Cowgirls Drop No. 21 Texas, 2-0
September 28, 2005 | Cowgirl Soccer
OSU won its Big 12 opener for the fourth straight year and remain unbeaten on the season at 8-0-2, while Texas fell below .500 at 3-4-1.
“We are not a bad team,” head coach Karen Hancock said afterwards. “We just beat a pretty good team that is ranked No. 21 in the nation. We just beat a nationally ranked team on our field. That is a good team regardless of where they are right now.”
The Cowgirls grabbed the early lead and the defense played solid to preserve the shutout. Freshman Bettina Grossmann earned her third consecutive start in goal, and she has recorded a shutout in two of those three games.
Texas tried to put the pressure on the rookie goalkeeper by taking 23 shots, but only having five shots on goal. The Longhorns came close to scoring on a couple of occasions, hitting the cross bar once and just missing the goal on a few more. Grossmann, the reining Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week, saved all five shots on goal.
Rosholt scored the first goal in the 15th minute on a ball played forward by Angelika Feldbacher. Rosholt beat Texas keeper Dana Hall in a one-on-one situation to make the score 1-0.
The second goal came off of a restart by Jessica Jarrell in the 21st minute. Cassie Lewis flicked the ball towards the goal and Rosholt finished from there for her team leading ninth goal of the season. Rosholt has scored five goals in the last two games, and she has scored in six of OSU's 10 contests this season.
The 23 shots allowed by the Cowgirls are the most they have allowed all season. It was only the second time they have been out shot this season as well. The Cowgirls only took eight shots, their lowest output thus far, but they put two shots in the net.
“I like our team,” Hancock said. “ We have room to grow and improve, but I like what we are doing right now. I like the pace of development the team has shown with so many new players. To compete against a quality team like that with so many new kids is a good achievement.”
OSU will travel to Colorado for its first Big 12 road game in Boulder, Colo., on Friday night at 7 p.m. The Cowgirls will return home for a Sunday afternoon game against Texas Tech.
