Cowgirls Saddle Up for Season Opener
September 02, 2005 | Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
The Cowgirls' top runners will compete at the Idaho State Invitational, while the “B Team” will run in the Hurricane Festival.
“We are excited to open the season with a talented group of experienced runners,” head coach Rene Sepulveda said.
The Cowgirls will travel a talented group of runners to Pocatello, Idaho, which includes sophomore Mary Davies (2004 Big 12 Newcomer of the Year), senior Barbora Kuncova (2004 All-Big 12), junior Eva Slavkiova  a transfer-student from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore where she was the 2004 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference's cross country champion  and senior Valentina Medina.
Other Cowgirls that will compete at the two-mile Idaho State Invitational will be sophomores Kim Blomkivst, Eva Tomankova, and freshmen Anissa Angelosante and Brittany Hill.
Sepulveda said the meet will feature high altitude conditions that will make it challenging for the Cowgirls.
At the Hurricane Festival in Tulsa, senior Alison Erzinger will try and lead a pack of Cowgirls, after coming off a honorable track and field season, by earning All-American in the 400-meter hurdles.
Senior Cody Birk also will also help lead an inexperienced group of runners, which includes juniors Andrea Gagan and Erin Dalbey, sophomores Jennifer Clarke, Tessa Miller, Linda Whiteley and Stephanie Shyrock, and freshman Kalea Tam.
“The Hurricane Festival will give some of our new runners a chance to gain experience,” Sepulveda said.
Last season, the Cowgirls finished first in the meet as Davies led the way with a second-place finish.
The Idaho State Invitational's start time has not been announced. Tulsa will host its meet at Mohawk Park with the start time set at 8:30 a.m.
