Cowgirls Beat Oral Roberts in Oklahoma Shootout
September 17, 2005 | Cowgirl Soccer
OSU improved to 6-0-2 with the victory, while ORU evened its record at 3-3.
“I though Oral Roberts came out and played a very tough game,” head coach Karen Hancock said. “I thought they came out with a high level of intensity and I think we did a good job to make sure we were ready for that. We matched their intensity for about the first 20 to 25 minutes of the game.”
Oklahoma State and Oral Roberts played to a stalemate in the first half. The Cowgirls put more pressure on the Golden Eagles out shooting them 13-5 in the first half, but they could not get one past ORU keeper Stef Gurley. Gurley had six saves in the first half and seven for the game.
At the start of the second half, ORU took it to OSU early trying to put pressure on Bettina Grossmann, who saw her first action in goal on the season. The Golden Eagles took 13 shots for the game, but only two of them were on goal and Grossmann saved them both.
The action quickly turned in the favor of Oklahoma State. In the 64th minute the Cowgirls were given a free kick on the right wing. The ball was deflected down to Jessica Jarrell who took her time and knocked the ball into the far corner of the net.
“Jessica (Jarrell) has been solid for us all season,” Hancock said about her freshman. “She did a good job of stepping up and winning balls, and she got to be the hero tonight by putting us on the board.”
The Cowgirls did not feel comfortable until the 77th minute when Jesyca Rosholt played the ball across the goal line and Angelika Feldbacher knocked it in for a much needed insurance goal.
“I think we let off the gas a little bit at the end of the first half,” Hancock added. “It may have just been frustration because we hadnt scored yet. The final third of the game we were a little sharper and came away with a couple of goals. It was a good win tonight. Oral Roberts is always a tough game for us.”
Grossmann went the distance in goal for OSU to earn the shutout in her first game at keeper.
“Bettina played well, she was solid,” Hancock said. “She did have to handle the ball a few times and she did a great job when she was called upon.”
The Oklahoma Shootout will continue on Sunday when Oklahoma plays Oral Roberts at 4:30 p.m. OSU will host Tulsa at 7 p.m. All fans who bring a ticket stub from tonight's game will receive free admission.
