Cowgirls Dump Texas State, 3-0
August 27, 2005 | Cowgirl Soccer
The Cowgirls controlled the first half with not much to show for it. OSU could not quite connect on several goal scoring opportunities as a couple of shots hit off the post and a few more just missed the goal. The best opportunity early came when Jesyca Rosholt got past the defense but her shot clanged off the post. The Cowgirls had another goal wiped away after they were called for offside.
Colwell finally gave the 721 OSU faithful in attendance something to cheer about when she hit the back of the net from 40 yards out. Colwell heard even more cheers after she completed her back flip in celebration.
“Colwell had been playing for a couple of years now and all she really wanted to do was score a goal and whenever she did she would do a back flip,” head coach karen Hancock said. “I think she was in such shock after she scored that she forgot to do her back flip so we had to remind her from the sidelines. It was a great goal and it was something we really needed at the time.”
The Cowgirls continued to control the ball on Texas State's side of the field, but could not find the goal until just before halftime. Cassie Lewis played a ball through the defense that Rosholt out ran everybody to and made a move on the keeper to score on the empty net just six seconds before halftime. It was the 10th career goal for Rosholt, but nine of those came while playing at Northern Arizona.
OSU out shot the Bobcats 12-0 in the first half. TSU could never muster much of an attack and when it did it was quickly thwarted by the stellar OSU defense led by freshman Yolanda Odenyo, junior Katie Lacey and senior Kalyn Brady. Odenyo had five shots of her own, most of which came off of headers in the box that just sailed wide.
The second half was not any different as OSU controlled the entire half out shooting Texas State 14-1. The lone shot to find the twine for the Cowgirls was off the foot of freshman Bettina Grossmann. Jamie Markaverich played a cross into the box that was cleared out by the Bobcat defense but right to Grossmann who knocked it in.
The Cowgirls return to action on Sunday when they face Arkansas State at 1 p.m. at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex. OSU soccer campers and elementary school students with a flyer receive free admission.
