August 25, 2005 | Cowboy Golf
The duo halved the first five holes of the match before Martin struck first with a birdie at the par-4 sixth hole before Eaton squared the match two holes later.
With the match all square through 11 holes, Eaton took control down the stretch on the inward nine, picking up wins at Nos. 12, 14, 15. Martin birdied the 16th to get back within two with two holes to play, but a halved 17th provided the final outcome.
Martin opened stroke play with a 5-over 75 at Merion Golf Club before posting a 1-over 71 at Philadelphia Country Club to get into a 19-player playoff Wednesday morning for the final 17 spots in the 64-player bracket for match play.
Of the four players in the field with OSU ties, Martin was the only player to advance to match play.
Former Cowboy Trip Kuehne carded rounds of 71 and 79 to finish tied for 114th in a group at 10 over that included redshirt freshman Jonathan Moore, who finished with scores of 74 and 76. Dayton Rose, a senior on last year's squad, tied for 190th place with a 14-over-par total of 154 after posting score of 73 and 81.
