Cowboys practice late Sunday
August 22, 2005 | Cowboy Football
After starting practice shortly after 7 p.m., the Cowboys practiced into the night, ending the workout with a lot of running drills shortly before 9 p.m.
“We had a nice, spirited practice tonight,” said coach Mike Gundy. “It ended up getting dark on us with cloud cover, but we wanted to get out there and make some corrections from the scrimmage, and give our players the opportunity to run and open up their lungs  get a good sweat in before we take a day off tomorrow for the first day of classes.”
Gundy said he was pleased with the conditioning of the players, who have been practicing since August 3.
“We ran hard and finished,” Gundy said. “I really feel like our team is in good shape, now we'll find out on September third because I'm sure it'll be over 100 degrees on the turf when we kick off. “We'll find out how our guys hold up in the no-huddle offense, and how our defense holds up, but I really feel like we're in good shape.”
The first-year coach credited strength and conditioning coach Rob Glass for continuing to get the players in good shape before the Cowboys host Montana State on Sept. 3 to begin the season.
“We always worry about that as coaches,” said Gundy about the chance of injuries. “I'm not sure that you can never put your finger on what exactly causes it, but I'm going to give a lot of credit to coach Glass and what he's been able to accomplish this summer.”
While he was encouraged by many things from Saturday's scrimmage, Gundy said he saw enough things that need to be worked on, so the team will scrimmage multiple times this week.
“We were just going to scrimmage once, but after the way I felt yesterday, we're going to scrimmage twice this week,” Gundy said. “One of them will be a 40 or 50 (play scrimmage) and one may be 70 or 80.”
The Cowboys will be off Monday, but will return to the field Tuesday afternoon for a closed practice.
“We'll stay in-house from here on out,” Gundy said. “We've got to prepare to play Montana State.”
