Cowboys near end of summer practices

“I think everybody is excited,” said senior linebacker Lawrence Pinson. “It's been a long camp, but it's also been a good camp. We've prevented a lot of injuries, and we all went hard. We're definitely all in shape.”
When it comes to a long practice schedule, senior offensive lineman Charlie Johnson knows exactly how much time has been spent preparing for the season.
“It's been the longest camp I've been to so far,” Johnson said. “We reported to camp on the third, which is two and a half weeks, but it's been good.
“Everybody's starting to get it together.”
After watching over his team as they prepare for the Sept. 3 season opener against Montana State, coach Mike Gundy said he understands what the players have been going through.
“Camp's hard,” Gundy said. “Even though there aren't a lot of two-a-days now, you don't have as many numbers as you used to have, so these guys are getting as many reps as we used to in the old days, but it doesn't seem that way.
“These guys need to get through the next few days, and once school starts, it's down hill for them.”
Before the Cowboys can head to class, they must complete Saturday's closed scrimmage and then go through a light practice Sunday, which is also closed to the public.
“We've just got to finish,” Pinson said. “We've had a good camp, and we've got a lot of guys that have stepped up, and it's going to tell tomorrow.
“Everybody has got to make plays and we're going to see who we're going to have to count on.”
With classes starting Monday morning, Johnson said he is looking forward to spending time in the classroom.
“Going to class will be a change,” Johnson said. “For the past two and a half weeks, it's just been football, football, football. Now we get to get back on campus, see friends and get back in the routine of preparing for the season.”
