Cowboys complete third scrimmage of week
August 20, 2005 | Cowboy Football
The Cowboys scrimmaged behind closed gates for nearly two hours, but lightning and then rain caused the scrimmage to be called about 10 minutes early.
“We're getting better,” said coach Mike Gundy. “The encouraging thing today is we showed a lot of toughness, which I had been looking for the last couple of weeks. I was looking for the players ability to take a blow, be out there when they're fatigued and get back into the huddles and not lay on the ground.”
After looking on as his team went through the non-scripted scrimmage, the first-year coach said he was once again impressed with the defense.
“I like what we're doing on defense,” Gundy said. “I'm encouraged by the ability for us to disguise what we're doing. I think we show some team speed on defense. On the second level, our players move from side to side really well.”
While the running game struggled in earlier scrimmages this week, Gundy said the group made improvements today.
“It was better,” Gundy said. “The running backs had some good runs, and at other times they didn't.”
But Gundy said a possible reason for the struggles for the running game could have been the effort of the defense.
“Defensively, we played very good again,” Gundy said.
The Cowboys will go through a light workout Sunday evening, and the practice will be closed to the public.
