Cowgirls Travel Six to NCAA Outdoor Championships
June 08, 2005 | Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
The six national qualifiers are the most by any Cowgirl team during the Big 12.
Big 12 Champion and All-American candidate, senior Delisa McClain (No. 9 nationally), will take her talent into the hammer throw, where she will look to throw for an All-American mark.
Junior Barbora Kuncova, the Big 12 Champion in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, will look to have a strong showing in the event as well as in the 10k run, where she and freshman Mary Davies qualified for the event at the Stanford Invitational.
The Cowgirls will also be led behind the running of Davies, as she qualified in two events (5,000-meter and the 10k), but will only compete in the 10,000-meter run.
“I hope to have a better performance than I did at the Midwest Regional Championships,” freshman Mary Davies said. “It feels good to get to the NCAA Championships as a freshman.”
In the 400-meter hurdles, junior Alison Erzinger will compete in her first ever NCAA Championships.
“This is not only a stepping stone in my career, but also for the team,” junior Alison Erzinger said.”
Two seniors, Halee Prickett (shot put) and Paula Ogunbanjo (triple jump), also look to have strong performances in their last competition as Cowgirls. Ogunbanjo was the last Cowgirl to get invited to the championships, after receiving a wild card bid.
“Getting a wild card is a blessing, since I did not perform the way I wanted to at the Midwest Regional Championships,” senior Paula Ogunbanjo said. “God has given me a second chance to finish my season off right.”
