Cowboy Golf Finishes 15th At NCAA Championship
June 05, 2005 | Cowboy Golf
The top-ranked Cowboys, who started the day in 14th place, concluded the 72-hole event with a 58-over-par score of 1,178 to come in five shots behind Georgia State and Georgia Southern, which tied for 13th place. Georgia walked away with the team title after holding a wire-to-wire lead. The Bulldogs carded a final round of 280 for a 1,135 total to cruise to an 11-shot victory over Georgia Tech.
The showing marked just the third time in school history that OSU has finished outside the top 10 in consecutive appearances at the event. The finish was also the first time in 14 events this season the Cowboys have finished outside the top five in the team standings.
OSU concluded the 2004-05 campaign with seven victories and three runner-up finishes.
Senior Alex Norén turned in the second-best result of his four NCAA Championship starts. The Stockholm, Sweden, native chipped in for par on the final hole of his collegiate career, giving him a round of 75 and an 11-over total of 291 to place 39th.
Washington's James Lepp blistered the par-70, 7,131-yard layout with a 63 to vault himself into a tie with third-round individual leader Michael Putnam of Pepperdine and force a playoff. Lepp, who posted a 4-under 276 total, made par on the third playoff hole to capture medalist honors.
Freshman Pablo Martin finished in a tie for 47th for the Cowboys with a 295 total after a round of 75. At the conclusion of the tournament, the Malaga, Spain, native was named a first-team Ping All-American and received the Phil Mickelson Award, honoring the nation's top freshman.
Martin became the first OSU player to earn first-team honors since Hunter Mahan received the distinction in 2003 on his way to being named the national player of the year.
Sophomore Ryan Posey recorded his second consecutive 74 to tie for 54th place at 298.
Fellow sophomore Tyler Leon and junior Zack Robinson finished in a three-player deadlock for 58th place at 299, 19-over, after rounds of 74 and 73, respectively.
