Four Cowboys Named to PING All-America Team
June 10, 2005 | Cowboy Golf
The four selections marks the highest total for the school since 1996 when OSU had two second-team and two third-team picks. The quartet also raises the number of Cowboys to receive the distinction to 143 in the 59-year history of the program.
Freshman Pablo Martin, who was named a first-team selection at the conclusion of last week's NCAA Championship, heads the list. The Malaga, Spain, native also received the Phil Mickelson Award as the nation's top freshman after posting a pair of victories as well as a team-best 71.20 stroke average. Throughout the course of the year, Martin was also named a Ben Hogan Award semifinalist, the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year and was a participant in the Palmer Cup.
An honorable mention selection a year ago, sophomore Tyler Leon was named a second-team pick after earning his first career victory this season at the Taylor Made/Waikoloa Intercollegiate. The Dallas, Texas native also posted six top 10s on his way to a 71.95 stroke average. Earlier this year, Leon was named a first-team Academic All-Big 12 selection as well.
A pair of Cowboys, senior Alex Norén and junior Zack Robinson, were chosen to the squad's third team.
Norén, a native of Stockholm, Sweden, competed in 12 events, posting three runner-up finishes and compiling a season stroke average of 72.27. He finished his career tied for 14th place on the school's all-time list for rounds in the 60s with 21 and was a two-time selection to the European squad for the Palmer Cup.
Robinson garnered the honor after a spring that saw him post six top-10 finishes in nine starts. The Ft. Worth, Texas, native also enjoyed a successful campaign in the classroom where he was named a Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar and was the lone player named to the Academic All-Big 12 team with a 4.0 grade point average.
The quartet led OSU to a No. 1 national ranking this past season and seven team victories in 14 tournament starts.
