Cowgirls to Compete at Big 12 Outdoor Championships

“We hope to score as good or better than we did at the Big 12 Indoor Championships,” head coach Rene Sepulveda said.
Senior Delisa McClain, the 2005 Big 12 Indoor Champion in the weight throw, will put her No. 1 Big 12 ranking on the line against second ranked Laci Heller of Kansas State. The hammer throw will take place Friday.
“Delisa is in great shape,” throwing coach Teri Steer said. “I see nothing better than beating a tough opponent in her home environment.”
Friday's events will give the Cowgirls chances of scoring points for the team standings with freshman Tihana Sarac (No. 7 in the Big 12) competing in the heptathlon, freshman Deleanor Kirkpatrick (No. 8 in the Big 12) in the hammer throw, freshman Brandi Broaddus (No. 9 in the Big 12) in the javelin and NCAA National qualifiers junior Barbora Kuncova (No. 2 in the Big 12) and freshman Mary Davies (No. 3 in the Big 12) in the 10,000-meter run.
Senior Valentina Medina, the 2004 Big 12 Champion in the 1,500-meter run, will look to stride for another championship in the 1,500-meter run on Saturday.
The Cowgirls will then look to score points from senior Halee Prickett (No. 3 in the Big 12) and freshman LaKendra Greathouse (No. 13 in the Big 12) in the shot put.
Senior Michelle Prowse's performance in the 5,000-meter run will be important for the team standings. Prowse also looks to improve on her regional qualifying mark in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Junior Alison Erzinger (No. 6 in the Big 12) is another potential scorer for the Cowgirls, but in the 400-meter hurdles.
The Cowgirl's 4x100-meter relay team will compete on Sunday that is consisted of four jumpers, sophomore Lauren McKee, senior Cody Birk, junior Melissa N'Dubilo and Sarac.
The Championships will conclude on Sunday with the finals and other individual performances with the top eight finishers adding points to their team standings. Senior Paula Ogunbanjo (No. 5 in the Big 12), who has qualified for the regionals, will compete in the triple jump. Davies (No. 3 in the Big 12) will then compete in the 5,000-meter run, where she has qualified for regionals.
Kansas State will be the host of the three day championships, with competition beginning Friday at noon.
