Cowboy Golf Earns 59th Consecutive NCAA Championship Bid
May 22, 2005 | Cowboy Golf
The Cowboys began the day with a three-shot lead over Augusta State, but a 13-over 293 team score gave OSU a final total of 858, 18 over, allowing the Jaguars to climb to the top of the leaderboard. ASU turned in a final round of 281 on its way to a nine-shot victory.
The event marked just the second time in eight tries this season the Cowboys have failed to win a tournament after holding a 36-hole lead and was OSU's third runner-up finish of the season.
Individually, Pablo Martin came up just short in his bid to become the first OSU freshman to win three tournaments. Martin entered his final round with a three-shot lead, but wound up one shot off the pace of the Jaguars' Kalle Edberg for medalist honors. The Malaga, Spain, native posted a 71 on Saturday for a 4-under 206 total.
Despite a double bogey on No. 15, Martin held a one-shot lead with two to play, but an eagle by Edberg on the par-5 17th hole resulted in a two-shot swing and Martin's first career runner-up finish.
Junior Zack Robinson carded a 2-over 72 for the second time in the tournament to move up four spots into a tie for 36th place at 218, while senior Alex Norén posted a 75 to slip into the group tied for 36th as well.
Sophomores Ryan Posey and Tyler Leon concluded play tied with eight other players for 56th place at 11-over 221 after rounds of 75 and 78, respectively.
The Cowboys will attempt to claim their 10th national title when they travel to Owings, Mills, Md., and Caves Valley Golf Club on June 1-4 for the NCAA Championship.
