Cowboy Golf Maintains Lead After Two Rounds At Central Regional
May 21, 2005 | Cowboy Golf
Due to inclement weather yesterday morning, the Cowboys finished their first round on Friday, carding a 2-over 282 for a two-shot advantage over Augusta State before posting a second-round 283 for a 565 total and a three-shot lead over the Jaguars.
In his quest to become the first Cowboy freshman to win three tournaments in a season, Pablo Martin will take a three-shot lead into tomorrow's final round after posting rounds of 65 and 70, respectively, for a 5-under 135 total. The Malaga, Spain, native was the lone OSU player unable to finish his round yesterday, completing 17 holes. He returned to the course this morning with a birdie on his final hole, getting him to 5 under and giving him a new career-low round.
During his second 18, Martin stood at 4 over with five holes to play before recording two birdies and his second eagle of the tournament to get back to even par for the round and retain his lead.
“I think this is a great golf course,” Martin said. “It is really challenging, with small greens. You have to be really patient. It is easy to make bogeys and not very easy to make birdies.”
Sophomore Tyler Leon rebounded from his 74 on Thursday with a 69 to move up 47 spots into a tie for 19th place in a group at 143 that includes senior teammate Alex Norén. Leon made the turn at 1 over before registering birdies on three of his final five holes to break 70 for the 11th time this season.
“It was a pretty funny round,” Leon said. “I was 3 over through four, but then I finally made a putt, and everything changed for me. I started playing well and just hung around all day and got in at 1 under.”
Norén followed his opening round of 73 with an even-par 70 that included four birdies as he climbed from 47th into his current position on the leaderboard.
Junior Zack Robinson recovered from an outward 39 with an even-par closing nine to finish with a 74 and in a tie for 40th at 146 .
Like Robinson, sophomore Ryan Posey carded a 72 during yesterday's round before a round of 74 to end play in the 12-player group tied at 146.
The Cowboys will attempt to wrap up their 59th consecutive trip to the NCAA Championship when they tee off with Augusta State and Missouri tomorrow morning at 7:12.
