Cowboy Golf Set To Begin Postseason At NCAA Central Regional
May 18, 2005 | Cowboy Golf
Oklahoma State's men's golf team will be in search of an unprecedented 59th-straight NCAA Championship appearance this week when it begins play at the NCAA Central Regional on Thursday. The top-seeded Cowboys head to South Bend, Ind., and Notre Dame's 7,011-yard, par-70 Warren Course fresh off a victory last weekend at The Maxwell. The 27-team field will play 18 holes on each of the event's three days with the top 10 squads advancing. OSU will begin its first round at 11:15 a.m. and will be paired with Augusta State and TCU before teeing off at 7:12 a.m. on Friday with the Jaguars and Horned Frogs.
OSU AT THE CENTRAL REGIONAL
The Cowboys have captured five titles and produced four individual medalists at the regional tournament since the inception of the current qualifying format in 1989. The program's victories came in 1989, 1990, 1997, 2002 and 2003. OSU is one of just six schools to compete in every NCAA Regional, joining Arizona, Arizona State, Clemson, North Carolina and UNLV.
OSU VS. THE FIELD
Over the course of the season, the Cowboys have amassed an impressive record of 161-11 against the nation. Of their 161 victories, 60 have come against 20 teams competing in the Central Regional. The Pokes' lone loss this season to a regional opponent came when they finished fifth behind Jerry Pate Intercollegiate champion Augusta State.
POKES CARRYING MOMENTUM INTO POSTSEASON
The Cowboys enter the home stretch of their schedule playing their best golf of the season, having won three consecutive tournaments and four of their last five outings. OSU began the stretch with its win at the Hall of Fame Invitational before a second-place finish at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate. Since their runner-up showing in Austin, the Cowboys have reeled off wins at the Texas A&M Invitational, Big 12 Championship and The Maxwell.
