Top-ranked Cowboys Look To Claim Big 12 Title
April 28, 2005 | Cowboy Golf
Oklahoma State's men's golf team will look to capture its first conference title since the 2000 season this week when it travels to Trinity, Texas for the Big 12 Championship at the par-72, 7,330-yard Whispering Pines Golf Course. After a third-place finish a year ago, the No. 1-ranked Cowboys will enter this year's event as the top seed and will be paired with No. 2 seed and three-time defending champion Texas as well as third-seeded Texas Tech. The 54-hole event will consist of 18 holes played on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Senior Alex Norén, junior Zack Robinson, sophomores Tyler Leon and Ryan Posey as well as freshman Pablo Martin will comprise the OSU starting lineup.
OSU AT THE CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP
In 58 seasons, the Cowboys have captured an astounding 48 conference championships, including three Big 12 crowns, and have produced 41 individual champions. Overall, the Cowboys have produced four Big 12 individual champions with Leif Westerberg emerging victorious in 1997 and Charles Howell winning in 2000 before Anders Hultman (2002) and Hunter Mahan (2003) made it back-to-back medalists to round out the quartet. OSU's string of four consecutive seasons without a conference title is the longest in the program's history with the only other time the Cowboys gone more than one season without a league title being a two-year stretch from 1956-57.
BIG 12 REWIND ... A YEAR AGO
OSU saw its winless streak at the Big 12 reach a school-record four years as the Cowboys finished in third place at 873 (+33), coming in nine shots off the pace of champion Texas at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan. OSU also saw its string of individual medalists stopped at two as UT's Jason Hartwick tallied a nine-shot victory. Alex Norén and Casey Wittenberg posted top 10s for OSU after finishing tied for third and eighth, respectively.
