Cowboys Make Big Plays in Final Scrimmage
April 11, 2005 | Cowboy Football
The Cowboys made big plays on both sides of the ball. Jerry Don Bray picked off a Donovan Woods pass and rumbled 34 yards for the score. Grant Jones intercepted Robert Reid, but fumbled on the return to give the ball back to the offense. The offense turned the ball over a total of three times.
On offense, Al Peña hooked up with Kenny Williams for a 55-yard touchdown pass, and Donovan Woods ran for a 44-yard score on an option keeper around the right side.
“I would have liked to have seen the offense limit their turnovers and for the defense to stop the run on third and short,” head coach Mike Gundy said. “I was excited about the offense's ability to make a play in the two-minute drill. Our defense had some good hits, and did a good job in goal line situations.
“I am excited about the big plays we made in the passing game. I thought we threw the ball downfield better than we have in the past. At the same time, I was concerned about giving up big plays on defense.”
Reid led the passing attack with 153 yards on 14-for-24 passing, while Woods completed 11-for-15 for 131 yards. Peña was 6-for-11 for 102 yards. All three quarterbacks connected for a touchdown pass. Mike Hamilton led the ground game 83 yards on 12 carries.
The scrimmage was the spring finale for Oklahoma State. The Cowboys open the 2005 season on September 3 at home against Montana State.
