Oklahoma State Continues to Lead at NCAA Wrestling Championships

Oklahoma State's three freshmen went into quarterfinal action as decided underdogs at 125, 133 and 141. Coleman Scott faced a rematch with top-seeded Sam Hazewinkel of Oklahoma after Scott beat him in the Big 12 finals. Hazewinkel rode Scott for the entire second period to establish a riding time advantage, and then got an escape in third to win 2-0.
Nathan Morgan met Edinboro's second-seeded Shawn Bunch. Bunch's style is very similar to Morgan's, but Bunch was quicker and took it to Morgan from the opening whistle and came away with a 13-7 decision.
Daniel Frishkorn got the first takedown on Oklahoma's second-seeded Teyon Ware. After an escape in the second period, Frishkorn led the match entering the third period. Frishkorn was able to hold off Ware for most of the third period, but Ware lifted Frishkorn and took him down with 10 seconds remaining to steal the win.
“Our older guys have been here before, we know what to do,” senior Chris Pendleton said. “We are just looking to go out and send as many people as we can to the finals and end it (the team race). I am counting on our young guys to come through in the consolation bracket.”
OSU sent their favorites to the mat, following the three tough losses to the freshmen. Top-seeded Zack Esposito went to the mat against Hofstra's ninth-seeded Jon Masa. Esposito pinned Masa the last time the two met, but this match was much different. Esposito came out on top of all the scrambles and held off Masa for a tight 6-2 decision.
At 165, third-seeded Johny Hendricks squared off against Chattanooga's sixth-seeded Jon Sioredas, who beat Hendricks in the first match of the season in November. Hendricks took the lead in the third period when Sioredas was hit for his second stalling warning. Then Hendricks took all doubt out of the match by throwing Sioredas to his back and pinning him in 6:20.
Pendleton looked much stronger in the quarterfinal round against Northern Iowa's Eric Hauan. Pendleton took down Hauan with ease and even put him on his back a couple of times before going up 16-1 in third period and ending the match in a tech. fall in 5:58.
“I was not feeling very well yesterday,” Pendleton said. “I just came back today and refocused. I was a lot more intense in my match.”
Jake Rosholt was never really challenged by Penn State's Philip Davis. Rosholt took an early lead and held off Davis for a 9-4 victory.
Undefeated Steve Mocco gave OSU their fifth semifinalist by holding off Iowa's ninth-seeded Matt Fields. Mocco got a solid double leg takedown in the first period and that proved to be all he needed as he defeated Fields 4-0.
Kevin Ward won his first consolation match over Matt Hill of Edinboro by an 8-2 score, but was eliminated by 11th-seeded Chris Horning of Clarion.
The Cowboys widened their margin over second-place with 78.5 points. Cornell is currently in second-place with 55.5 points.
The semifinal matches will be carried live through ESPN syndication, which will be live on Cox Cable in Tulsa and on a tape delay basis on Cox Cable in Oklahoma City. The semifinals can be heard in Stillwater on 93.7 FM or on the web at okstate.com.
