OSUs Cowgirls host Panhandle State at 5:30 p.m. The Cowboys won their first exhibition game with a 107-64 victory over Oklahoma City on Tuesday night. Oklahoma Christian is 2-0 with a 99-87 win over Arkansas Baptist at home on Nov. 5 and a 74-66 victory over Texas Wesleyan on the road Tuesday night. The Eagles are ranked third in the NAIA preseason poll nationally.
Last Time Out
Oklahoma State trailed, 14-8, midway through the first half, but then scored 99 points in the final 30 minutes as the Cowboys defeated Oklahoma City, 107-64, in their exhibition opener. Sophomore JamesOn Curry led the scoring surge with 20 points, while five other players scored in double figures. Oklahoma State shot 58.8 percent for the game, including 71.4 percent in the second period. It was not all about offense, though, as OSU also limited OCU to just 28 points in the second stanza on 29.4 percent shooting. The Cowboys had 10 slam dunks in the game, including several alley-oop slams and an off-the-backboard dish from Curry to the high-flying Torre Johnson, Jr. The OSU defense was solid, with 14 steals and 15 blocked shots. Senior Aaron Pettway led the swat attack with seven blocks. Oklahoma State outscored 13th-ranked Oklahoma City 64-20 in the paint, led by Mario Boggans 14 points.
About the Eagles
Oklahoma Christian is 2-0 this season and ranked No. 3 nationally in the preseason NAIA poll. The Eagles received 300 points in the poll, including one first-place vote. Azusa Pacific is No. 1 in the NAIA poll, followed by Mountain State and Oklahoma Christian. Brady Page, a Yale, Okla., product, leads the Eagles early in the season. He is averaging 27.5 points per game on 61 percent shooting, including 6-of-11 from beyond the three-point arc. The Eagles are coached by Dan Hays, in his 23rd season at Oklahoma Christian with an overall record of 479-245.
Cowboys Excel in Exhibition Contests
Oklahoma State has been very successful in exhibition games over the years, including a 28-1 mark in the Eddie Sutton era. That lone loss came against the Athletes First squad on Nov. 9, 2000, with the traveling team coming away with a 96-95 win over the Pokes in Enid, Okla. Prior to 2000, the Cowboys had won 22 consecutive exhibition contests. The streak dated back to Nov. 22, 1988, when the Cowboys lost 80-63 to an outstanding Soviet team led by Sharunas Marchulenis, Arvidas Sabonis and Alexandr Volkov. With Tuesday nights 107-64 win, OSU has now reached the century mark in points 13 times since 1988.
OSU signs a pair of prep standouts
Oklahoma State has signed two players to National Letters of Intent. Obi Muonelo, a 6-5, 215 pound senior at Edmond Santa Fe High School in Edmond, Okla., was the Daily Oklahomans Player of the Year as a junior last season, leading his team to the Class 6A state title. He is rated the No. 18 prospect in the country according to Rivals.com. Gary Flowers, a 6-8, 205 pound forward originally from Dallas Lincoln High School, played with current Cowboy Byron Eaton. Flowers is currently enrolled at Genesis One Christian Academy in Mendenhall, Miss., and is ranked as the No. 7 postgraduate player in the nation according to Scout.com.
Former Cowboys in the NBA
Four former Oklahoma State Cowboys are currently listed on rosters in the NBA. Desmond Mason, a first-round pick of the Seattle Supersonics in 2000, has been traded to the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets from the Milwaukee Bucks. Tony Allen, a first-round draft selection in 2004, is in his second year with the Boston Celtics. Joey Graham, a first-round pick of the Toronto Raptors this past summer, is entering his rookie season. Melvin Sanders, who finished his OSU playing career in 2003, played his first NBA game on Nov. 9 for the San Antonio Spurs.
OSU Basketball on the air
All of OSUs Cowboy basketball games will be aired live on the Cowboy Radio Network. Dave Hunziker, a broadcast veteran of 17 years, is entering his fifth season as the voice of the Cowboys. Tom Dirato, Coordinator of Radio & Television for the OSU Athletics Department and a broadcast veteran for 29 years, is back at press row to add color analysis. As radio engineer, Joe Riddle handles all the necessary pregame, in-game and postgame duties required to run a quality show as he has done in three decades. The broadcast begins with a one hour pregame show, and ends with a postgame show, including player interviews and a wrapup with Coach Eddie Sutton.
