Cowgirls Fall to Kansas, 4-1
October 07, 2005 | Cowgirl Soccer
Kansas struck first just a mere 4 1/2 minutes into the game when Jessica Smith netted her first goal on the season off of a pass from Jessica Bush.
The Cowgirls quickly tied the game, however, as Ashlyn Brantley beat KU goalkeeper Julie Hanley to knot the game at one. Brantley scored it 22 seconds after the Jayhawks' goal.
The Jayhawks went back in front when Smith scored her second goal of the game in the 18th minute. This time it was off of a feed from Michelle Rasmussen. Emily Strinden made it 3-1 just before halftime on a penalty kick in the 43rd minute.
Smith completed the hat trick with a goal in the 75th minute to finish off the Cowgirls, who played the second half a player short after Lauren Colwell received a red card just before halftime.
Rankin saw her first action in goal since the Cowgirls beat Louisiana-Lafayette back on Sept. 11. Rankin had been sidelined with a knee injury. She did record 2 saves, but allowed all four goals. Oklahoma State had previously not allowed more than one goal in a game.
OSU out shot KU in the second half, 8-5, despite being forced to play shorthanded. The Cowgirls also managed to force KU into giving them three corner kicks, but they could not find the net after Brantley's goal early in the game.
OSU will travel to Columbia, Mo., to play Missouri on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
