Cowboy baseball begins fall practice
October 03, 2005 | Cowboy Baseball
After watching returners and newcomers compete together for the first time, coach Frank Anderson said he was glad to be practicing again.
“This is what we all look forward to because this is what we recruit for, do all the paperwork for and all of those other things to see what we've got,” Anderson said. “We get to see the new guys and have some fun.”
Anderson said the team will workout daily for the next three to four weeks. The afternoon practices will consist of offensive and defensive drills plus a scrimmage.
Last fall, Anderson had to fill six defensive positions while watching newcomers compete for the other two spots.
This season, there are only three holes vacated by regular starters, but Anderson warned the other five are not filled by the returners. The Cowboys lost seniors Rusty Ryal and Jeff Parrish, while junior Chris Gutierrez signed with the Toronto Blue Jays.
“We're going to have some guys that played last year that are going to have to battle to keep those spots,” Anderson said. “It's an exciting time because we've got some good young talent, and it's fun to watch them play.”
One of the biggest highlights from Monday's scrimmage came when junior Ty Wright sent a waist-high fastball over the left field wall where it ricocheted off the nearby softball stadium's press box.
