McClain Leads Cowgirls and Receives an Automatic NCAA Qualifying Mark

Oklahoma State's women's track and field team had a strong performance at two meets on Friday and Saturday.

At the Jayhawk Invitational in Lawrence, Kan., the Cowgirls were led by seniors Delisa McClain and Paula Ogunbanjo.

McClain for the third straight week set a new school record and won the weight throw with a throw of 67-04.75(20.54-meters) and received an automatic NCAA mark.

The Cowgirls also received a strong performance from senior Paula Ogunbanjo as she won her first triple jump event of the season with jump of 40-03.50(12.28-meters)

In Seattle, Wash., the Cowgirls competed at a two day meet at the University of Washington Invitational, on Friday and Saturday.

Oklahoma State had a good performance in the distance medley relay, where the team took first-place over teams from Portland, Central Washington and Eastern Washington. Freshman Kim Blomkvist, freshman Eva Tomankova, junior Alison Erzinger and senior Catherine Clifford won the event in a time of 11:59.96.

Erzinger, a junior from Houston, Texas also won the 400-meter run with a time of 54:85 and with that finish it was the first time for her to break 55 seconds in that event. In the 200-meter run she finished second and set a personal record with a time of 24.80.

The Cowgirls also finished three runners in the top 15 in the 5000-meter run. Freshman Mary Davies set an NCAA provisional mark of 16:35.94. Junior Barbora Kuncova finished in seventh-place and set a personal record with a time of 16:53.07. Clifford finished 11^th and also had a personal record setting day as she had a time of 17:55.88.

Michelle Prowse, a junior from Whangarei, New Zealand, returned to action for the first time in four weeks, after having the flu. Prowse finished fourth in the 1,000-meter, with a time 2:52.16.

The Cowgirls will return to action next weekend at the Oklahoma Invitational in Norman, Okla., on Saturday February 5.
